BRYSON / SOUTHERN MONTEREY COUNTY — October 30, 2026. After the fire-related road disruptions affecting southern Monterey County earlier this year, recreational visitors to nearby Fort Hunter Liggett have a more practical question: which authorized fishing and hunting-program areas are actually available, and what paperwork is required? The U.S. Army installation’s official iSportsman forecast page, updated October 26, names eight designated fishing locations for October 28–30, 2026. Its wildlife check-station calendar also advertises selected November operating windows.

The installation is an active military training site, not a general-access county park. Even on a day when a lake or area appears on the public schedule, users must comply with permit rules, area-specific access controls, military closures and required iSportsman check-in. The official forecast warns that authorized areas can change without advance notice.

Eight areas named for October 28–30

The October 26 forecast specifically lists fishing for Del Venturi, Generals, Gravel Pit, Milpitas, Coleman, Hughes, Woodrow and El Piojo during October 28–30. This is a dated forecast of potential access, not a real-time guarantee that every location remains open through the end of October 30 or that fish are present and biting. The name of an area on a map does not waive requirements for a California fishing license or installation permission.

Upcoming wildlife check-station periods

Fort Hunter Liggett’s check-station page lists November 7–15 (weekends only) and November 21–29 (excluding Thanksgiving) as anticipated upcoming dates. Hours are given as 9 a.m. to dark. The station is described as adjacent to the campground and accessed from Mission Road off Jolon Road. These are anticipated operating windows, not hunting-season dates or an assurance that a particular hunting area will be released for use.

The military installation says hunters must report harvested game upon check-out through iSportsman and bring harvested deer or elk to the check station when it is operating. Visitors should read the current game-reporting, check-in and visitor requirements directly in the official portal. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife’s 2026 big-game digest separately notes that Fort Hunter Liggett elk tag holders need an installation permit and mandatory orientation. A permit from one jurisdiction does not substitute for the other.

Who can use the program?

The official iSportsman homepage describes public access through its regulated hunting-and-fishing program. Adult guests as well as participating hunters and anglers need an appropriate access permit. Users must have a valid California license for the relevant activity, complete program safety instructions and follow its check-in system. Permits are purchased through the authorized site and are generally listed as non-refundable. The portal’s instructions say visitors who cannot check into an open area must not hunt or fish.

Before making a trip, read the official steps to obtain a permit, including the safety briefs, eligibility and any base-entry controls. Requirements can differ between an authorized field area and the military cantonment. This article is a public service guide, not an advertisement for weapons, hunting equipment or permits.

Fire and road information are a separate check

Fort Hunter Liggett’s September 14 Plaskett Fire update said that Nacimiento–Fergusson and Del Venturi roads had reopened and the installation hunting-and-fishing program had resumed. That dated statement must not be used to conclude that all roads and forest recreation areas are unrestricted on October 30. A road can reopen to some vehicles while a Forest Service closure order, military training restriction or fire-suppression repair project remains in effect elsewhere.

Fort Hunter Liggett lists a 24-hour nonemergency dispatch number (831) 386-2513 for inquiries about public-road status on post. Its official homepage advises visitors to verify road information and provides links to the installation’s current alerts. Drivers approaching from the Bryson or Lockwood side should check their complete route, rather than assuming that a September opening makes every forest access point lawful.
